About the Women’s Institute
Founded in 1915, the Women’s Institute (WI) began with a simple but powerful aim: to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in food production during the First World War. From these beginnings, the WI has grown into a dynamic and influential organisation that continues to inspire women across the country.
Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with more than 212,000 members in over 6,300 Institutes nationwide. Since celebrating its centenary in 2015, the organisation has continued to thrive, evolving to reflect the interests and ambitions of modern women while staying true to its founding values of community, education and friendship.
The WI offers women of all ages the opportunity to learn new skills, share experiences and take part in a wide variety of activities — from creative workshops and guest speakers to community projects and social events. Just as importantly, it provides a powerful platform for women to campaign on issues that matter to them, creating positive change both locally and nationally.
At its heart, the WI is about connection, confidence and community — bringing women together to make a difference while enjoying friendship and fun along the way.
